Praiano turns into a film set in May, with road changes on the SS163

If you're driving through Praiano this month, keep one eye on the road signs. The town is becoming an open-air film set from May 8 to May 22, and a few streets will slow down or close at specific moments while crews work.

That sounds fun if you're walking around with a camera. It sounds less fun if you're trying to reach dinner in Positano at exactly 8:00 PM. So here's the practical version.

What's happening

The Municipality of Praiano has announced filming in several parts of town during May. Local police ordinances no. 21 and 23/2026 introduce temporary traffic limits, no-parking zones, and short pedestrian closures so the production team can move equipment and people safely.

The affected areas include Marina di Praia, via Terramare, via Roma, via Guglielmo Marconi, via Costantinopoli, and several points along the SS163 Amalfitana.

The road detail travelers should know

The most important point for visitors is on the coastal road itself: traffic on the SS163 near kilometer 20+600 will be managed intermittently during filming.

In plain English, expect short waits. This is the kind of delay that can be harmless if you left early, and very annoying if you are already late for a ferry, restaurant booking, or transfer.

Marina di Praia and via Terramare

Around Marina di Praia and via Terramare, pedestrian access will be stopped during some filming windows. There will also be no-parking zones with removal of vehicles.

If you planned to park near the beach or walk down for lunch, check the temporary signs before leaving the car. Praiano is steep, and nobody wants a surprise climb back up to move a vehicle.

Via Roma: no parking from May 8 to 22

From May 8 to May 22, a permanent no-parking zone will be in place on via Roma, near bus stop no. 9 in the direction of Amalfi.

This is worth noting if you're staying in Praiano and using a rental car. Spaces are already limited here, even on a normal day.

Extra restrictions on May 20, 21 and 22

The busiest filming days for traffic management appear to be May 20, 21 and 22.

During those dates, more no-parking zones and temporary road closures are expected in different parts of Praiano, including areas along the SS163 near Hotel Tritone, Hotel Margherita, and Hotel Casa Angelina.

Emergency vehicles, police, and rescue services will still be allowed through.

My advice if you're visiting Praiano in May

Give yourself a buffer. Ten or fifteen extra minutes may be enough for most trips, but if you're catching a ferry from Amalfi or meeting a driver, add more.

Also, trust the temporary signs more than Google Maps for this one. Film shoots move in real time, and the local signage will be the clearest guide on the day.

For walkers, this could actually be a nice little moment. Praiano already feels like a natural movie location, with the sea opening below the road and the village dropping toward Marina di Praia. Just don't stand where the police tell you not to stand. They will be busy enough.
