License Plate Restrictions Return to the Amalfi Coast for Easter Week
If you're driving along the Amalfi Coast between April 25 and May 2, pay attention to your license plate. The targhe alterne (alternate plate) system is back on the SS163 Amalfitana for the Liberation Day and May Day holidays.
How It Works
Every day from 10:00 to 18:00, vehicles are restricted based on the last digit of their license plate. Even dates mean no even plates. Odd dates mean no odd plates. Outside those hours, drive freely.
The rule runs from April 25 through May 2, 2026.
Who's Exempt
Good news for several categories:
- Residents of the 13 Amalfi Coast towns and Agerola — no restrictions
- Motorcycles and scooters — always free to pass
- Taxis and NCC (private hire cars)
- Disabled pass holders (with the holder in the car)
- Emergency vehicles and police
Tourists with a hotel reservation can drive in on their check-in day and out on check-out day. Non-resident workers can drive for work purposes only. Second-home owners need authorization from their Comune.
What This Means for Visitors
The SS163 is a narrow, winding road that was never built for modern traffic. During holiday weeks it turns into a parking lot. These restrictions actually help — fewer cars means less time stuck behind a bus on a cliff edge.
Practical tips:
- Travel before 10:00 or after 18:00 if your plate doesn't match
- Use a scooter — two-wheelers are always allowed
- Take the SITA bus instead of driving
- If you have a booking, you're covered for arrival and departure days
