If you are planning to move between Amalfi, Vietri sul Mare and Salerno on Thursday, May 14, give yourself extra time. The Giro d’Italia is passing through Salerno, and SITA Sud buses will follow temporary routes while the city closes part of the race route.

The changes are scheduled from 12:00 until about 15:30, or until the roads reopen. For visitors, the simple version is this: buses should still run, but some routes will be longer, some stops will be skipped, and traffic around Salerno may feel messy for a few hours.

What is changing

Salerno has prepared a special traffic plan for the sixth stage of the Giro d’Italia 2026. The affected streets include Piazza M. Grasso, Via Trento, Via Posidonia, Lungomare Marconi, Lungomare Tafuri, Piazza della Concordia, Lungomare Trieste and Via Benedetto Croce.

That cuts across some of the usual bus approaches to the seafront and station area, so SITA Sud will reroute several lines.

Amalfi and Vietri buses

For many Amalfi Coast visitors, this is the part that matters most:

  • Buses arriving in Salerno from Amalfi will be diverted from Vietri onto the A3 motorway, pass through the Cava de’ Tirreni junction, then re-enter Salerno via Fratte and continue toward Via Vinciprova.
  • Buses leaving Salerno for Amalfi will depart from Via Vinciprova, stop at Piazza Vittorio Veneto near the train station and Corso Garibaldi 118, then use the motorway via Salerno Centro and Cava before returning to Vietri sul Mare and the normal coast road.

In practice, expect a less scenic approach and possible delays. If you have a train, ferry, restaurant booking or airport transfer after lunch, do not cut it close...

Other SITA routes affected

The same traffic plan also changes SITA routes between Salerno and:

  • Naples, both via motorway and SS18
  • Avellino
  • Castiglione and San Cipriano
  • Battipaglia, Giffoni, Pescopagano, Roccadaspide and Montecorvino Pugliano
  • the southern side of Salerno province

Some city stops will be temporarily suspended, including Piazza XXIV Maggio and Piazza Casalbore on certain routes. Southbound services will also skip stops between Corso Garibaldi near the train station and the Via Parmenide / Arbostella area.

Quick advice if you are travelling

  • Check the latest SITA Sud notices before leaving.
  • Leave earlier than usual between midday and 15:30.
  • If you are going to Salerno station, aim for a wider buffer than normal.
  • For airport transfers, private drivers and ferries, confirm pickup points in advance.

The Giro is a lovely bit of Italian chaos when you are watching it with a coffee in hand. It is less lovely when your bus is taking the motorway detour and your train is leaving in twenty minutes. Plan around the pink race, and the day will be much easier. 🚲
