Frana sulla Statale Amalfitana: strada chiusa a Vietri sul Mare
Landslide Closes Statale Amalfitana: Road Blocked in Vietri sul Mare
Early this morning at 5:40 AM, a retaining wall collapsed near the former "La Pergola" restaurant in Fuenti, sending cubic meters of debris, soil, and large rocks tumbling onto the SS 163 Amalfitana coastal road.
The wall, already in precarious condition near a tourist facility, gave way completely — blocking the road in both directions at kilometer 47+300 between Vietri sul Mare and Cetara.
What This Means for Travelers
Road Status: Completely closed in both directions
Affected Section: Vietri sul Mare ↔ Cetara

What Happened?
This is another reminder of the Amalfi Coast's geological fragility. The coast's dramatic cliffs and terraced landscapes — what makes this place breathtaking — also make it vulnerable to landslides, especially after rain.
Crews are working to secure the slope and clear the debris. The road is one of the main arteries connecting the eastern and western sides of the coast, so this closure impacts everyone from local commuters to tourists exploring the region.
Planning Your Trip?
If you're visiting this week:
- Check SITA schedules before heading out (official updates only)
- Allow extra travel time for detours
- Consider staying put if you're already in Amalfi/Positano/Praiano and exploring locally until the road reopens
- Follow ANAS updates for official road reopening announcements
The Valico di Chiunzi route is scenic but winding — if you're prone to motion sickness, take precautions. And as always on these roads: drive slowly, stay alert, and enjoy the views (when it's safe to do so).
🛣️ Stay safe out there, and we'll update you when the road reopens.
Disclaimer: Schedules and road conditions subject to change. Always verify with SITA (bus) and ANAS (road) for real-time updates.
